Far Beyond the Reach of Earth
The official religion of Nine Lives, though it is followed to different degrees by different members and internal factions. The believers worship the syndicate’s leader, Roland Nazon, as some sort of near-god. Members of his inner circle, as well as the more faithful elsewhere, wear melted-stack jewelry to give them powers, as the religion holds that the stack, as the home of the self, is a powerful source for dark magics. It is a mix of Afro-Caribbean pre-Fall religions, with various other culture’s shamanistic traditions here and there, as well as some new bits added by Nazon over the years.
It translates as “The Prayer”, and incorporates some mystical rites that have become deeply ingrained in the organization. The most notorious is the induction rite, which involves inflicting either physical of psychological torture upon a victim, often another failed inductee or former member. The creativity, enthusiasm or effectiveness of the torture helps determines placement within the organization.
